ABSTRACT The Sonoran semi-desert with its stressful conditions of high temperature, salinity and drought affect the plant physiological performance and productivity. In this region, a study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the dynamics of leaf development, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), leaf senescence time and primary productivity of Parkinsonia aculeata L. Sp. Pl. in three sites there where high temperatures conditions prevail. It was found that heat does not affect the development dynamics nor leaves length, however, drought does, reducing their development rate to 0.2 cm day-1. The NDVI was more affected by drought condition, with values lower than 0.79. Salinity caused leaves senescence at 67 days. Parkinsonia aculeata L. Sp. Pl. presented higher primary productivity under heat condition, generating 116 g m-2 month-1.

RESUMEN El semidesierto de Sonora con sus condiciones estresantes de altas temperaturas, salinidad y sequía afectan el desempeño fisiológico y la productividad de las plantas. En esta región se realizó un estudio con el objetivo de evaluar la dinámica del desarrollo de las hojas, el NDVI (Índice de Vegetación de Diferencia Normalizada), el tiempo de senescencia de las hojas y la productividad primaria de Parkinsonia aculeata L. Sp. Pl. en tres sitios donde prevalecen condiciones de altas temperaturas, salinidad y sequía. Se encontró que las altas temperaturas no afectan la dinámica del desarrollo ni la longitud de las hojas, sin embargo, la sequía reduce sí, reduciendo su ritmo de desarrollo a 0.2 cm día-1. La condición de sequía fue la que más afectó el NDVI se afecta más por la condición de sequía, con valores inferiores al 0.79. La salinidad causó la senescencia de las hojas a los 67 días. Parkinsonia aculeata L. Sp. Pl. presentó mayor productividad primaria en la condición de calor, generando 116 g m-2 mes-1.

Parkinsonia aculeata L. (palo verde) it is native to semidesert region and seasonally dry tropical forests. A more detailed study of the biochemical composition of its organs could offer information for its use for pest and disease biocontrol in species of agricultural and economic interest. This research aimed to determine the content of polyphenols and flavonoids in hydroalcoholic extracts obtained from the stems and leaves of P. aculeata and its phytotoxicity in tomato seedlings applied at the early stages of growth. The extracts were applied at 15, 25 and 35 days after emergence (DAE). The highest content of polyphenols and flavonoids was obtained in the leaves, and the polyphenol concentration exceeded that of flavonoids. The hydroalcoholic extracts, of both stems and leaves, presented level 5 phytotoxicity in tomato plants at 15 DAE. However, from 25 DAE, there was no phytotoxicity. At 35 DAE, there was only phytotoxicity when the volume of both organs was 5 mL Plant-1. There was a significant interaction between organ and volumes factors. The study shows that leaf and stem extracts can be used for fusarium wilt biocontrol without causing phytotoxicity in tomato plants from 25 days, using volumes between 1 and 3 mL plant-1.

Parkinsonia aculeata L. (palo verde) es originaria de regiones semidesérticas y bosques tropicales estacionalmente secos, aunque se distribuye en varias regiones del mundo. Entre las principales características de esta especie se encuentran el tallo verde, plantas reducidas, vegetales moniliformes, número mínimo de plagas y enfermedades que la afectan. Un estudio más detallado de la composición bioquímica de sus órganos podría ofrecer información para su uso en el biocontrol de plagas y enfermedades en especies agrícolas de interés económico. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar los contenidos de polifenoles y flavonoides en extractos hidroalcohólicos de tallos y plantas de P. aculeata y la fitotoxicidad en plántulas de tomate, aplicado en etapas tempranas de desarrollo. Los extractos se aplicaron a los 15, 25 y 35 días después de la emergencia (DPE). El mayor contenido de polifenoles y flavonoides se obtiene hoy en día y la concentración de polifenoles supera a la de flavonoides. Los extractos hidroalcohólicos, tanto de tallo como de hoy, presentan un nivel 5 de fitotoxicidad en plantas de tomate, sin embargo, a partir del 25 DPE no existe fitotoxicidad. A los 35 DPE solo existió fitotoxicidad cuando se aplicó el volumen de 5 mL de Plant-1 de ambos órganos. Hubo una interacción significativa entre el órgano y las fuentes de variación de volumen. El estudio demuestra que los extractos de plantas y tallos pueden ser utilizados para el biocontrol de fusariosis sin causar fitotoxicidad en plantas de tomate a partir de los 25 días, utilizando dosis entre 1 y 3 mL planta-1.

El mayor contenido de polifenoles y de flavonoides se obtuvo en las hojas y la concentración de polifenoles superó a la de los flavonoides. Los extractos hidroalcohólicos, tanto de tallos como de hojas presentaron fitotoxicidad de nivel 5 en las plantas de tomate, sin embargo, a partir de los 25 DPE no existió fitotoxicidad. A los 35 DPE solo existió fitotoxicidad cuando se aplicó el volumen de 5 mL Planta-1 de ambos órganos. Existió interacción significativa entre las fuentes de variación órganos y volumen. El estudio demuestra que se pueden emplear extractos de hojas y tallos para el biocontrol de fusariosis sin causar fitotoxicidad en plantas de tomate a partir de los 25 días, empleando dosis entre 1 y 3 mL planta-1.

Abstract Taking into consideration the importance of beans for human nutrition, and the contribution of local production to the regional food security in the south of the state of Sonora, a trial was established during the spring-summer 2020 cultivation cycle in the Block 2110 of the Yaqui Valley. The experiment aimed to evaluate the effect of the application of three commercial biostimulants in the yield components of bean, variety Pinto Bill Z. Four treatments with four repetitions were established: T1 (FloraStart®); T2 (Austar®); T3 (mixture of Tricel-20® + Aminocel 500®, 1:1 ratio) and T4 (control, without biostimulant application) in a completely randomized experimental design. The treatments were applied only once during the flowering phenophase R6. The variables evaluated were number of pods per plant, pod length, number of grains per pod, grain mass per pod and per plant, and grain yield. The use of biostimulants increased the number of pods per plant in the evaluated variety. The pod length and the number of grains per pod did not show significant variation with respect to control. The T1 was the one that most contributed to the increase in the number of pods per plant, to the individual grain mass and, consequently, to the grain yield (5.4 t ha-1), with an increase of 2.3 t ha-1 with respect to the control, which demonstrates the feasibility of their application to increase the production of Bill Z Pinto beans in southern Sonora.

Resumen Teniendo en cuenta la importancia del cultivo del frijol para la nutrición humana, y el aporte de las producciones locales a la seguridad alimentaria regional en el Sur del estado de Sonora, se estableció un ensayo durante el ciclo primavera-verano, 2020, en el Block 2110 del Valle del Yaqui. El objetivo del experimento fue evaluar el efecto de la aplicación de tres bioestimulantes comerciales en los componentes del rendimiento de frijol, variedad Pinto Bill Z. Se establecieron cuatro tratamientos con cuatro repeticiones: T1 (FloraStart®); T2 (Austar®); T3 (mezcla de Tricel-20® + Aminocel 500®, proporción 1:1) y T4 (testigo, sin aplicación de bioestimulante) en un diseño experimental completamente aleatorizado. Los tratamientos se aplicaron por única vez en la fenofase de floración R6. Se evaluaron las variables cantidad de vainas por planta, longitud de las vainas, número de granos por vaina, masa de los granos por vaina y por planta, y rendimiento de grano. El uso de bioestimulantes incrementó la cantidad de vainas por planta en la variedad evaluada. La longitud de la vaina y el número de granos por vaina no presentaron variación significativa respecto al testigo. El T1 fue el que más contribuyó al incremento del número de vainas por planta, la masa individual de los granos y, en consecuencia, del rendimiento de grano (5.4 t ha-1), con un incremento de 2.3 t ha-1 respecto al testigo, lo que demuestra la factibilidad de su aplicación para incrementar la producción del frijol Pinto Bill Z en el sur de Sonora.

Summary Soil salinity is one of the main constraints affecting rice production worldwide. This stress is expected to intensify due to climate change that is occurring globally. Rice is one of the most important cereals and it feeds more than 50% of the world population. To meet the demand of the increasing population, rice production must be continuously improved and for this, one of the strategies to reduce the damage caused by salinity is the use of bioactive products that are friendly to the environment. This review compiles updated information on the effects that salinity stress causes on rice plants, emphasizing its influence on the root system of these plants, taking into account the multiple functions that roots perform. In addition, the potential of oligogalacturonids as possible protectors of plants against salinity stress is discussed. These compounds, obtained from fruit peel pectin, have shown their stimulating effects on rooting, growth and differentiation of various plant species.

Resumen La salinidad del suelo es una de las principales limitaciones que afectan la producción de arroz en todo el mundo. Se espera que este estrés se intensifique cada vez más debido al cambio climático que se está presentando a nivel global. El arroz es uno de los cereales más importantes y alimenta a más del 50% de la población mundial. Para satisfacer la demanda del aumento de la población la producción de arroz debe mejorarse continuamente y para ello, una de las estrategias para reducir los daños que provoca la salinidad es el uso de productos bioactivos que sean amigables con el medio ambiente. La presente revisión recopila información actualizada sobre los efectos que el estrés salino provoca en las plantas de arroz, haciendo énfasis en su influencia en el sistema radical de estas plantas, teniendo en cuenta las múltiples funciones que las raíces desempeñan; además, se discuten las potencialidades de los oligogalacturónidos como posibles protectores de las plantas al estrés por salinidad. Estos compuestos, que se obtienen a partir de la pectina de la corteza de los frutos, han demostrado su efecto estimulante en el enraizamiento, el crecimiento y la diferenciación de diferentes especies vegetales.

ABSTRACT Based on climate change scenarios predicted for northwestern Mexico, an experiment was carried out during the 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 crop cycles, under field conditions in wheat, in the Yaqui Valley, Sonora, Mexico. The assay consisted on canopy temperature increase by + 2 °C with respect to ambient temperature, using a temperature free-air controlled enhancement (T-FACE) system for temperature manipulation and control. This experiment aimed to determine the existing correlation among vegetative and reproductive variables that can result precise indicators of warming tolerance. A total of 30 variables divided into: morphological (6), physiological (7), biochemical (8) and agronomic (9) indicators were evaluated, using CIRNO C2008 cultivar as experimental model. For each variable, the response index, in a total of five repetition each year, was computed. Results indicated that, during the vegetative stages, the most precise variables for heat tolerance evaluation were: dry matter, vegetal vigor, water potential, nitrate reductase and transpiration indexes; while during the reproductive stage were: grain and biomass yield, spike mass and vain grain per spike indexes. There was a positive correlation among the most majority of vegetative and reproductive variables, being water and osmotic potential indexes those with the greatest contribution to biomass and grain yield. From the 30 evaluated variables, water and osmotic potential, transpiration, grain yield and field water use efficiency indexes were the most precise indicator of heat tolerance in CIRNO C2008 under canopy temperature increase in + 2 °C.

Abstract Background: One hundred and forty-three species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known in Mexico. Mi-crobiome analysis allowed us to look into the diversity of AMF species interacting with a specific plant species and to recognize novel species not yet reported in our country. Objective: To analyze the diversity of AMF species associated with papaya colonized with inocula from two contrasting ecosystems: cloud forest (CF) and deciduous forest (DF). Methods: From these two ecosystems CF and DF, soil AMF spores were obtained and reproduced in trap cultures. These were used as inoculum to test its effect on growth in papaya. Massive sequencing was performed to identify the AMF species associated to the roots of this plant species. Results and conclusions: Both inocula showed positive results in the growth of papaya demonstrating high mycorrhizal dependency. Twelve virtual taxa associated with papaya were found, three of them were present in both treatments, five and four virtual taxa in the treatments with DF and CF inoculum, respectively. In this microbiome analysis, we found the species Funneliformis dimorphicus, which had not been previously reported in Mexico, and this is the first record of its presence in our country.

Resumen Antecedentes: Se conocen 143 especies de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) en México. El análisis micro-biómico permite analizar la diversidad de especies de HMA que interaccionan con una especie vegetal específica y reconocer nuevas especies desconocidas en nuestro país. Objetivo: Analizar la diversidad de HMA asociados a papaya colonizada con inóculos provenientes de dos ecosistemas contrastantes: bosque mesófilo de montaña (BMM) y selva baja caducifolia (SBC). Métodos: A partir de los ecosistemas BMM y SBC se obtuvieron esporas de HMA del suelo para reproducir en cultivos trampa. Estos últimos fueron empleados como inóculo para colonizar papaya. Se realizó secuenciación masiva para identificar cuales especies de HMA se asocian a las raíces de esta especie vegetal. Resultados y conclusiones: Ambos inóculos mostraron resultados positivos en el crecimiento de papaya y una alta dependencia micorrízica. Se encontraron doce taxa virtuales asociadas a papaya, tres en ambos tratamientos, cinco y cuatro taxa virtuales en los tratamientos con SBC y BMM, respectivamente. El análisis microbiómico permitió identificar a la especie Funneliformis dimorphicus, la cual a la fecha no había sido reportada en México. Éste constituye el primer registro de su presencia en nuestro país.

Abstract Background: Volunteer plants have been considered as a problem in crop areas as a possible disease reservoir, but also of microorganism diversity. Mycotrophic plants, such as maize may allow preserving mycorrhizal inoculum. The ecological preservation area La Uba, in Guasave, Sinaloa, is a relictual area of vegetation of low deciduous forest and studies of its soil microbiota are scarce. This region has been recently converted to agricultural soils. This is why we studied a contiguous transition zone. Objective: To establish the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) present in the rhizosphere and roots of volunteer maize plants in the transition zone contiguous to La Uba. Methods: Volunteer maize roots and soil were collected once in between agricultural cycles in a transition zone. Genomic DNA was extracted from AMF colonized maize roots and soil spores; the ITS region of the ribosomal DNA was amplified and massively sequenced. Results and conclusions: A total of twelve species of AMF were found, belonging to the genera Glomus, Rhizophagus, Funneliformis y Gigaspora.; Glomus was the most abundant genus. Glomus indicum was reported for the first time in Mexico. Volunteer maize plants may assist in conserving AMF inoculum in crop soils.

Resumen Antecedentes: Las plantas voluntarias se consideran un problema en suelos de cultivo como posible reservorio de enfermedades, pero también de diversidad de microorganismos. Plantas micotróficas como el maíz permitirían preservar inóculos micorrízicos. La zona de preservación ecológica La Uba, en Guasave, Sinaloa, es un relicto de vegetación de selva baja caducifolia y su microbiota ha sido poco estudiada. Esta región ha sido reconvertida a suelo agrícola, por lo que estudiamos una zona de transición aledaña. Objetivo: Establecer la diversidad de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) presentes en rizósfera y raíces de plantas voluntarias de maíz en una zona de transición contigua a La Uba. Métodos: Se colectaron raíces de maíz de plantas voluntarias y suelo una vez, entre ciclos agrícolas en una zona de transición. Se extrajo ADN genómico de raíces colonizadas con HMA y esporas del suelo, se amplificó y se secuenció masivamente el ITS del ADN ribosomal. Resultados y conclusiones: Se encontraron un total de 12 especies de HMA, pertenecientes a los géneros Glomus, Rhizophagus, Funneliformis y Gigaspora; siendo Glomus el más abundante. Glomus indicum se reporta por primera vez en México. Las plantas voluntarias de maíz pueden servir como reservorio de inóculo de HMA en suelos agrícolas.

Abstract The antifungal ability of extracts of Larrea tridentata in the inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum radicis-lycopersici in vitro and in vivo was evaluated. Once the Fusarium strain was characterized, the methodology of poisoned culture medium was used to determine the inhibition of mycelial growth at various concentrations (0-2000 ppm) and solvents (dichloromethane, methanol, ethanol and water). In the in vivo assay, ten treatments were evaluated: 2000 and 3000 ppm for DCM and EtOH, 3000 and 6000 ppm for MeOH and H2O and two controls; one plant as experimental unit and ten replicates. Plant height, leaf number, chlorophyll, severity, as well as incidence and survival were determined in tomato plants inoculated with the fungus and different extracts of L. tridentata. The extracts with a higher percentage of inhibition and vegetative development are dichloromethane at 3000 ppm and methanol at 4000 ppm, both in vitro and in vivo. Extracts of Larrea tridentata can be considered as part of an integrated management plan for the control of crown rot in tomatoes caused by Fusarium oxysporum radicis-lycopersici.

Resumen Se evaluó la capacidad antifúngica de extractos de Larrea tridentata en la inhibición de Fusarium oxysporum radicis-lycopersici bajo condiciones experimentales en invernadero. Una vez que la cepa de Fusarium se caracterizó, se determinó el crecimiento micelial in vitro y su efecto inhibitorio con los extractos de L. tridentata por el método del medio envenenado a diferentes concentraciones (0-2000 ppm) y disolventes (diclorometano, metanol, etanol y agua). En el ensayo in vivo se evaluaron diez tratamientos: 2000 y 3000 ppm para DCM y EtOH, 3000 y 6000 ppm para MeOH y H2O y dos testigos, considerando una planta como unidad experimental y diez repeticiones. Se evaluó la altura de la planta, número de hojas, clorofila, severidad, incidencia y sobrevivencia en plantas de tomate inoculadas con el hongo y tratadas con los diferentes extractos de L. tridentata. Los extractos con mayor porcentaje de inhibición y desarrollo vegetativo fueron: diclorometano a 3000 ppm y metanol a 4000 ppm, tanto in vitro como in vivo. Los extractos de L. tridentata pueden considerarse dentro de un plan de manejo integrado para el control de la pudrición de la corona en tomate causada por F. oxysporum radicis-lycopersici.
